With powerpoint images and samples of work I encourage young writers and illustrators to use their natural curiosity to seek out story ideas all around. My audiences have a front row seats as I demonstrate how an idea conceived, then sketched and revised, becomes a story. Revision improves my work so I am glad to share the importance of finding just the right word, or reworking a drawing to make a memorable book.
Often my work relies heavily on research. That research has taken me from Amish farms in Indiana to palaces in India, to the Indonesian rain forest, and to nomad tents in the Sahara desert. Audiences come away with a sense of wonder, having shared in my adventures!
You can prepare your students by sharing my books. The more familiarity they have the more they will benefit from my visit!
